Watermelon spirulina cooler

Fresh watermelon blended with spirulina, lime, and a pinch of salt. The watermelon sweetness is intense enough to make the spirulina completely invisible.

Yields
1 large glass
Time
5 minutes
Spirulina
1 g

Ingredients

  • 300 g fresh watermelon, deseeded and cubed
  • 1 g spirulina powder
  • Juice of half a lime
  • Pinch of sea salt
  • Small handful fresh mint
  • Ice

Method

  1. Blend watermelon until smooth. Add spirulina, lime juice, salt, and mint.
  2. Blend again briefly — just enough to incorporate the spirulina and bruise the mint.
  3. Pour over ice. Drink immediately for best colour.

Why this pairing works

Watermelon has the sweetest and most intense flavour profile of any smoothie base — the spirulina cannot be detected at this dose. The pink-to-green colour shift is striking. A pinch of salt brings out both the watermelon sweetness and masks any remaining spirulina bitterness.

Note. The colour will be a surprising deep pink-green — vivid and unusual. Make it fresh; watermelon separates quickly.
