Growers

The Growers Series.

In-depth profiles of the people who cultivate spirulina — from industrial farms on the Kona coast to artisanal ponds in the Pyrenees. Not tutorials. Records.

One of the quietest joys of running this community for nearly two decades has been meeting the people who actually grow spirulina. They are not always the industrial producers you see on supplement labels. They’re a retired teacher in Provence with a covered-pond operation that supplies the local market on Saturday mornings. A microbiologist in Vietnam running closed photobioreactors from a converted building. A grandmother in Tamil Nadu with a 200-litre tank on her balcony who feeds spirulina paste to her grandchildren.

The Growers Series is our attempt to record those conversations before they pass. Each profile is long-form: the equipment used, the growth-medium recipe, the practical problems that came up over years, and how they were solved.
