Spirulina and blood pressure: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Machowiak & Skonieczna-Zydecka · 2021 · Nutrients
Key finding
Meta-analysis of 7 RCTs found spirulina supplementation significantly reduced systolic blood pressure (mean reduction −4.6 mmHg) and diastolic blood pressure (mean reduction −3.0 mmHg) compared to control. Effect was stronger in participants with elevated baseline blood pressure.
Why this matters for consumers
A −4–5 mmHg reduction in systolic blood pressure is clinically meaningful — comparable to some medication dose adjustments. The population effect is clearest in people with elevated BP to begin with.
Study limitations
Only 7 trials available; heterogeneity between studies moderate; most trials small; publication bias possible.
