Inner Mongolia's emergence as the dominant global spirulina production zone is a story about climate, flat land, and cost. The region offers intensely sunny summers (June–August), flat steppeland easily converted to production facilities, and extremely low labour costs by global standards. Multiple large producers — including facilities operated by DIC Lifetec and numerous Chinese domestic companies — have built expansive open-pond operations across the region since the 1990s.

The volume from Inner Mongolia has transformed the global spirulina market. Before Inner Mongolian production scaled, spirulina was a relatively premium product produced in limited quantities in Hawaii, California, and parts of Asia. Inner Mongolia drove prices down dramatically through the 1990s and 2000s, making spirulina commercially accessible as a mass-market supplement for the first time.

Quality in Inner Mongolia spans the full range — from genuinely high-standard production with rigorous testing and good agricultural practices, to bulk commodity production where price is the only variable. The difficulty for buyers is that product from both categories often reaches Western markets through the same distribution channels, labelled only with a country of origin ('spirulina from China') that reveals nothing about the specific facility's standards.

The contamination risks associated with Chinese-origin spirulina are real but manageable with proper testing. The primary concerns are heavy metals (arsenic, lead, cadmium) and microbial contaminants. Reputable Chinese producers test every batch and publish results; others do not. This is exactly why a published, batch-specific CoA from an accredited laboratory matters more for Chinese-origin spirulina than for any other origin — the variance between the best and worst producers is wider.

The region supplies a significant fraction of the spirulina consumed globally, including by users of brands that don't disclose their source. Understanding that the Chinese origin label conceals enormous quality variation is the key insight. Always ask for the CoA, regardless of brand claims — and for Chinese-origin product, look specifically for heavy metal testing results from an independent laboratory.

We reject more bulk Chinese spirulina than we accept. Not because Chinese spirulina is bad — some of the best testing results I've seen came from Inner Mongolia. But you need to test every batch. The range is too wide to trust on brand name alone.
