The effect of spirulina supplementation on exercise performance
Gurney & Juturu · 2004 · International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism
Preliminary evidenceAthletic performance
Key finding
Spirulina supplementation led to modest improvements in maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) and peak power output during graded exercise testing. Fatigue onset was delayed compared to placebo.
Why this matters for consumers
Corroborates the Kalafati findings on exercise performance from an independent study. The VO2max signal is particularly interesting — improvements here are difficult to achieve with nutrition interventions.
Study limitations
Small sample; high dose (7.5 g/day); short intervention; only men studied.
