The effects of spirulina on allergic rhinitis
Cingi et al. · 2008 · European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology
Key finding
Spirulina significantly reduced nasal discharge, sneezing, nasal congestion, and itching scores versus placebo. The IgE levels were reduced in the spirulina group, suggesting a modulation of the allergic immune response rather than simple symptom suppression.
Why this matters for consumers
The largest spirulina RCT for allergic rhinitis, and the IgE reduction suggests a mechanistic effect rather than placebo. The 2 g/day dose is close to typical consumer usage.
Study limitations
Industry involvement in publication; IgE reduction needs independent replication; single-centre.
