Spiruline Turkey / Türkiye Spirulina

Turkey has a growing domestic spirulina production sector, largely centred around the Aegean and Mediterranean coasts where solar irradiance and climate conditions are suitable for outdoor cultivation. Several small Turkish producers operate under the Türkiye Spirulina or Spiruline Turkey umbrella, cultivating in open-pond and semi-closed systems. The Turkish domestic market has grown significantly since 2018, with increasing awareness among the health food community.

Mid-marketProducer

Strengths

  • Domestic Turkish production — short supply chain for Turkish customers
  • Mediterranean climate suitable for high-quality outdoor cultivation
  • Growing testing transparency under EU candidate country food safety alignment
  • Turkish organic certification (Organik Tarım) available from some producers
  • Competitive pricing within the Turkish market

Weaknesses

  • Quality control varies significantly between Turkish producers — not all are equally rigorous
  • Batch-level CoA availability is inconsistent across producers
  • Phycocyanin content rarely published
  • International distribution is very limited — primarily domestic Turkish market

Our verdict

Turkish buyers interested in domestic production should request a current CoA before committing to any Turkish producer. The sector is growing and quality is improving, but documentation transparency lags behind European and Hawaiian producers. For Turkish buyers who cannot access or afford imported premium spirulina, domestic producers with TSE certification and heavy metal testing are a reasonable option. For pregnancy or high-dose therapeutic use, seek a producer with published third-party heavy metal and microcystin results.
