Buying

Spirulina capsules vs tablets vs powder.

Capsules are a common format that many buyers overlook. Here’s how they compare to tablets and powder — and the specific advantages for people who struggle with tablets or want flexibility.

The three forms

Spirulina is commercially available in three primary forms:

  • Powder — the raw dried product, most versatile and cost-efficient, requires measuring and a vehicle to consume.
  • Tablets — compressed powder, convenient and tasteless when swallowed, fixed dose per tablet, typically 500 mg or 1 g.
  • Capsules — powder enclosed in a gelatin or vegetarian (HPMC) shell, tasteless when swallowed, easy to open if needed, and more easily dose-adjusted than tablets.

Capsules vs tablets: the differences

The nutritional content of capsules and tablets is identical — both contain the same dried spirulina powder. The differences are:

  • Binders and fillers: Tablets require binding agents (starch, magnesium stearate, or similar) to hold the compressed powder together. Capsules require none — the shell holds the powder. This makes capsules technically cleaner in terms of added ingredients.
  • Dose flexibility: Capsules can be opened and the contents dissolved into food or drink. This gives capsule users the flexibility of powder users — take as a capsule for convenience, or open and use in recipes. Tablets cannot be practically dissolved.
  • Swallowability: Some people find capsules easier to swallow than tablets — capsules are smoother and compress slightly when swallowed. Others find the opposite. Individual preference varies.
  • Vegan-friendly options: Gelatin capsules are derived from animal collagen and are not suitable for vegans. HPMC (hydroxypropyl methylcellulose) vegetarian capsules are widely available and equivalent in function. Always check the capsule material if this matters to you.

Typical dose in capsule form

Spirulina capsules are commonly available in 500 mg filling. For a 3 g/day target dose: 6 × 500 mg capsules. For a 5 g/day dose: 10 × 500 mg capsules.

Some producers offer 1 g capsules, which halves the count for higher-dose users. If you are targeting 4–6 g/day as an athlete, 1 g capsules are worth seeking out.

Who capsules are best for

  • People who find tablets difficult to swallow — the smooth shell and slight compression of capsules makes them easier for some people.
  • Vegans who want tablet convenience but no binders — vegetarian capsules with no excipients are the cleanest label option.
  • People who occasionally want to use spirulina in food — capsules can be opened; tablets are impractical to dissolve.
  • Children who cannot swallow tablets — capsule contents can be emptied into smoothies or food at precise doses.

Who capsules are not optimal for

  • High-dose users (5+ g/day) — the capsule count becomes large. Powder is more practical.
  • Cost-sensitive buyers — capsules are typically slightly more expensive per gram than tablets, due to the capsule shell cost.
  • Buyers who primarily cook with spirulina — opening capsules every time is less convenient than simply measuring powder.

Absorption differences

Capsules, tablets, and powder are absorbed identically once the shell dissolves or the powder is in the digestive system. The shell of a capsule begins dissolving in stomach acid within minutes; tablets disintegrate similarly. There is no meaningful bioavailability difference between the three forms.

Some marketing for capsules claims improved bioavailability — this is not supported by evidence. The capsule shell does not alter spirulina absorption.

Quality considerations for capsules

The same quality standards apply as for any spirulina product: third-party CoA for heavy metals and microcystins, disclosed phycocyanin content, batch-level testing. Additionally for capsules, check:

  • What the capsule shell is made of (gelatin vs HPMC vs other)
  • Whether any anti-caking agents or fillers are added to the powder inside

Clean spirulina capsules from reputable producers use only spirulina powder and the capsule shell — nothing else.
