Spirulina and Tau-GSK3β

A kinase whose inhibition by lithium mimics caloric restriction effects on the brain. Hyperactive GSK3β drives Alzheimer's tau pathology.

GSK3β and Tau

Glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK3β) phosphorylates tau at multiple serine/threonine sites, causing tau detachment from microtubules and aggregation into neurofibrillary tangles. GSK3β is inhibited by AKT-mediated phosphorylation at Ser9 and by lithium. Hyperactive GSK3β drives Alzheimer's tau pathology and several tauopathies.

Spirulina's GSK3β Suppression

Spirulina supports PI3K-AKT signaling (insulin signaling preservation, covered separately), increasing AKT-mediated GSK3β Ser9 phosphorylation that inactivates the kinase. Reduced neuroinflammation also lowers GSK3β activation. Net effect: 20-30% reduction in phospho-tau in animal Alzheimer's models.

Conclusion

Spirulina suppresses GSK3β through AKT pathway support and inflammation reduction. Mechanism relevant to tau pathology in Alzheimer's and tauopathies. Combined with effects on Aβ (covered separately), engages both major proteinopathies of AD.
