Spirulina and NFAT-Calcineurin
A calcium-activated phosphatase that turns on T-cell activation and pathological cardiac hypertrophy. Cyclosporine blocks it; spirulina nudges it.

Calcineurin-NFAT Axis
Sustained intracellular Ca²⁺ activates calmodulin-bound calcineurin, which dephosphorylates NFAT (nuclear factor of activated T-cells), permitting nuclear translocation. NFAT drives T-cell IL-2 transcription (T-cell activation) and pathological cardiac hypertrophy gene programs.
Spirulina's Calcium Effects
Spirulina's reduced oxidative damage to RyR2 and SERCA (covered separately) preserves calcium handling, preventing pathological sustained Ca²⁺ elevation that triggers calcineurin-NFAT in cardiac hypertrophy. T-cell calcineurin signaling is preserved (no immunosuppression at typical doses).
Conclusion
Spirulina's context-dependent effects on calcineurin-NFAT distinguish pathological from physiological activation. Cardiac hypertrophy protection without broad T-cell suppression — a favorable profile distinct from pharmacologic calcineurin inhibitors.
