Spirulina and JAK-STAT
A cytokine binds its receptor. JAK kinases transduce the signal. STAT transcription factors execute it. Block any step pharmacologically and autoimmunity dampens — and infections rise.

The Pathway
JAK kinases (JAK1, JAK2, JAK3, TYK2) phosphorylate STAT transcription factors (STAT1-6) downstream of cytokine receptors. STAT1 (IFN-γ, antiviral), STAT3 (IL-6, inflammation/ tumor), STAT5 (IL-2, growth), STAT6 (IL-4, Th2). SOCS proteins provide negative feedback. JAK inhibitors target autoimmune disease but increase infection risk.
Spirulina's SOCS Upregulation
Phycocyanin upregulates SOCS1 and SOCS3 (negative regulators of JAK-STAT), reducing STAT3 phosphorylation in chronic inflammation by 25-40%. Unlike pharmacologic JAK inhibitors, this restores physiological negative feedback rather than blocking the cascade entirely — preserving acute responses while reducing chronic activation.
Conclusion
Spirulina's JAK-STAT modulation is feedback-restorative rather than blockade-based. Relevant to chronic inflammation, autoimmune tone, and metabolic endotoxemia where STAT3 hyperactivity drives pathology.
